Nursing PhD

The PhD in Nursing is especially designed to prepare professional nurses as scholars and researchers who will make a substantive contribution to the body of acquaintance for the discipline of nursing and thus improve fitness services for those who receive nursing care. The nursing PhD program of studies builds either on highly developed clinical preparation in nursing at the masters level (MSN to PhD), or the baccalaureate nursing degree (BSN to PhD). Nursing PhD programs students have the best opportunity to conduct dissertation research in one of the 2 focal areas: fitness and functional status of persons and communities, and fitness status and functioning of family members. In addition to prepared coursework, the nursing PhD program particularly builds upon a mentorship model which recognizes that investigate skills are learned most efficiently by working with a faculty mentor, who specially provides opportunities to practice the use of research techniques and the design and implementation of original research within a focused nursing program of research.

Academic Policies of the Graduate School and School of Nursing

 Prospective nursing PhD students are necessary to refer to the most recent Web site for information relating to academic policies, registration for PhD, conduct and appeal, nursing student health, auxiliary services, and the Graduate Student Association. The most recent School of Nursing Graduate Student instruction book is a required reference for specific School of Nursing policies and procedures. School of Nursing policy mandates that all PhD students enrolled in nursing courses in which they are occupied in patient care and are "at risk" must show confirmation of licensure as a registered nurse in nursing school, mismanagement insurance, current CPR certification, and yearly certification of blood borne pathogens (OSHA) training. Confirmation of Hepatitis B vaccination is necessary on admission to the School of Nursing.

Goals of the Program

 The PhD nursing program particularly prepares nursing graduates who will be able to:

1. Assessment models, basic nursing concepts, and nursing theories for their utility in defining, organizing and expanding the body of nursing and health care information within the focal areas.

2. Contribute to nursing science through nursing theory-testing and nursing theory-generating latest research which is distributed through expert publications and presentations to the technical community.

3. Conduct fitness care investigations based upon systematically sound conceptual and methodological decisions about explore designs, measures, and nursing statistics.

4. Reflect a reliable commitment to human values and high moral standards in nursing practice and discipline.

5. Start and work together in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary endeavors that donate to the fitness and functional status of individuals and communities; and that foster the aptitude of families, including caregivers, to make possible the fitness of family members.

The PhD nursing program design particularly allows students to select one of 2 areas: fitness status and function of persons and societies and health status and functioning of family members. In addition to core nursing program course necessities PhD students complete 18 credits hours of required courses and electives in the preferred focal area.
